Hike to Lake Hartenstein

The Hartenstein Lake hike begins at Cottonwood Pass road west of Buena Vista. The distance is around 6 miles round trip with a starting elevation 9,900 ft and a lake elevation of 11,430 ft (gain and loss of 1,530 ft).  The trail is rocky in places and has one stream crossing. Good shoes and poles/hiking sticks are important. This hike will be a steady uphill climb to the lake and all downhill on the return to the cars at the trailhead. Expect to be on the trail for approximately 5 hours.

Location of Hike: Cottonwood Pass area west of Buena Vista
Hike Level:  Moderate due to the distance and the elevation
Distance:  approx. 6 miles roundtrip
Elevation Gain: 9,900 ft starting elevation, 11,430 ft lake elevation; gain/loss of 1,530 ft

Meeting time/location: 8:00 am at The Trailhead in Buena Vista, 402 E. Main St; the group will carpool to the trailhead

What to Bring: 

  • Bring plenty of water and a lunch/snack
  • Dress for the weather – mountain weather can change very quickly, please be prepared
  • Rain gear and synthetic, quick-dry clothing are always recommended
  • Wear sturdy hiking shoes
  • Hiking poles recommended
  • Bring/wear sun protection – sunscreen and hat
  • Bring insect repellent
  • Camera, binoculars are optional
